Judith M. (Wood) Barter, obituary
WARREN — Judith M. (Wood) Barter, 85, of Warren, passed away at Pen Bay Hospital in Rockport on March 9, 2025. Judy was born November 3, 1939, in Brockton, Massachusetts to Carl F. Wood and Nitelle (Barbour) Wood.
Judy grew up in Warren and attended local schools, graduating from Georges Valley High School in Thomaston in 1957. Judy married the love of her life, Kenneth L. Barter, on March 15, 1956.
In her younger years, Judy worked various jobs such as at the fish factory, blueberry factory, and the Warren Town Office as Tax Assessor. Judy made her career working and owning a franchise for H&R Block having offices in first Thomaston and then in Newcastle with Marion Sandborn. Judy thought of the franchise as truly a family business. Her mother would operate the copy machine, her husband Kenneth and son Kevin were custodians, her daughters Lori and Kathy were tax preparers and granddaughter Erica assembled tax returns. Judy was also very proud of her franchise, as her office was presented an award as top franchise in the northeast regional district for 15 years in a row. She retired from her franchise after working for 48 years.
Judy was a member of the Warren Baptist Church and taught Sunday School, the 4-H Club, White Oak Grange, Knox Pomona Grange and the Maine State Grange. She was also the treasurer for the Warren Day Committee for several years.
Judy enjoyed poetry and singing. In 1989 she wrote and published her poetry book which also included poems by her father. She sang in the choir at the Warren Baptist Church and also sang with Jeff Cash, Rosie Gerry and the Country Ramblers and the Country Stompers. Judy also performed several marriages in her 28 years as a Notary Public.
Judy was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth, in 1993; son, Kevin; brother, Paul W. Wood; sister-in-law, Grace C. (Littlehale) Wood; and stepson, George W. Barter.
Judy is survived by her daughters Julie M. Pease, Kathy S. Cushman and Lori E. Richardson. Judy is also survived by 29 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
