Presidential primary voting Tuesday, March 5
At the polls, Tuesday March 5, enrolled Democrats and Republicans will weigh in on Presidential candidates for their own parties, while unenrolled voters can make their mark on either the Democratic or the Republican Presidential Primary ballots.
This year, unenrolled voters can get a Presidential Primary ballot for either political party without having to register for a political party. In previous years, they had to enroll in one of the political parties in order to vote in a Presidential Primary. Voters not enrolled in a political party are close to one-third of all active voters in Maine.
Also new this year is the option of ranked choice voting for the candidates on both party’s ballots.
Polls are open from 8 a.m.to 8 p.m. in each town. Residents can register to vote up to and on Election Day.
In Camden, voting takes place in the Opera House, at 29 Elm Street, a change from the usual polling place at the Public Safety Building.
There are two candidates on the Democratic Presidential Primary ballot: Joseph R. Biden, Jr. and Dean B. Phillips.
There are five candidates listed on the Republican Presidential Primary ballot, although two have withdrawn from the race. The three candidates currently running for Presidential nomination are: Ryan L. Binkley, Nikki R. Haley and Donald J. Trump.
Ron DeSantis and Vivek G. Ramaswamy, who have previously announced their withdrawal from the Republican primary race, are also on the ballot.
The total number of all active, enrolled voters in Maine as of Jan. 18 is 948,734, according to the Department of the Maine Secretary of State.
This total includes the number of active Democratic voters – 343,688 (32 percent), active Republican voters – 279,936 (29.5) percent and unenrolled voters – 273,298 (28.8 percent).
Numbers of enrolled and unenrolled voters are maintained by the Department and do not include voters deemed inactive. Voters who fail to respond to a change of address confirmation notice are classified as inactive.
Voters can register in person up to and on Election Day. They must be at least 18-years-old, or be 17-years-old at a Primary Election date where the voter will be 18-years-old by the General Election in November and have a residence established in Maine.
