SOUTH THOMASTON — A pickup truck driver was able to continue along Spruce Head Road, in South Thomaston, for a good quarter of a mile with the hood of his truck blocking a lot of his view, Thursday afternoon, Jan. 4, 2024. Left behind, temporarily, was a field of truck debris, a dead moose, and a lot of people wondering when the last time was that a moose had been sighted in the region.

One firefighter could only think of one vehicle crash in South Thomaston involving a moose – and that was about 30 years ago. 

Today, at approximately 5:30 p.m., townspeople added a second moose encounter to their very short list when the call came out regarding the stricken 600-pound (estimate) beast at the entrance to Brookside Drive, and the truck up the road to the north and way out of sight of the crash site.

The driver of the vehicle was assessed on scene by South Thomaston ambulance crew while a firefighter directed traffic around the truck, which had stopped in the northbound lane; a second firefighter down the road next to the moose attempted to slow vehicles coming from the south.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office documented crash information, and Creek Hill Towing hauled both the pickup truck and the moose away on two separate wrecker beds.

The moose will be used for meat.
