Storm Lee slaps trees and wires down, sends branches flying

MIDCOAST – As of 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 16, most of Rockport and Camden remain in the dark in the wake of storm Lee, which brought strong winds and bouts of heavy rain to the Midcoast, beginning in the very early hours of the morning, and continuing through the day and evening. Even text messaging is unreliable for those trying to text a person in those towns.
Our 10:30 a.m. report – early in the meteorological event – provides the following:
The storm is gusting hard, and then winds calm slightly, almost to a sense of normalcy. Suddenly, though, gusts will pick up again, downing big trees and breaking branches, causing drivers on the road to suddenly swerve out of the way.
“While it seems the storm impact is less than predicted, there are many fallen trees and limbs,” said Camden Fire Chief Chris Farley, at 10 a.m. “Utility lines are also being impacted. We urge giving crews plenty of space to work. Slow down your travel and be cautious when out and about.”
Power is out is some spots, while remaining intact in Camden and Rockland, where Camden International Film Festival attendees are waiting in line to get into see the screenings.
Meanwhile, public work crews in all municipalities are working hard to clear the downed trees, or at least move them out of the way so they don’t cause crashes.
Tropical storm warnings persist through this afternoon and night, before the winds, still gusting to 50 mph, turn around from the northwest and begin to quiet down tomorrow. Still, the winds will be substantial on Sunday, gusting to 25 mph.
Since 11 p.m., Friday evening, firefighters and public works crews have been responding to incidents all over the counties, mostly fallen trees and dangerous wires. Power company contractors from out of state are on the highways, ready to restore electricity, when possible.
As of 10:30 a.m., power was out in the following towns in Knox, Lincoln Waldo counties:
