BELFAST — A Hampden man was arrested Feb. 21, in relation to an overnight break-in at Belfast’s Tire Warehouse, according to a media release from Belfast Police Chief Robert Cormier.

Tyler Robertson, 29, has been charged with theft after police discovered him with the missing tires. Due to prior convictions, the charge is a felony.

Belfast Police were made aware of the situation around 7 a.m. yesterday, when management at the store reported that someone had broken into one of their storage containers overnight, and that several new tires had been stolen. Police collected evidence at the scene and started their investigation.

At 11:41 a.m, a Tire Warehouse employee saw a silver Nissan pick up truck on Searsport Ave. that appeared to have several new tires in the back. The employee reported the sighting to police, who checked the area and were able to locate the vehicle parked at Yankee Clipper Motel, located at 50 Searsport Ave. The police also observed the tires, which reportedly matched the description of the ones stolen from Tire Warehouse which is located a short distance away, at 152 Searsport Ave. 

Police had probable cause to believe the truck held the stolen tires and arrested the driver, Tyler Robertson, at the scene. His vehicle was seized pending a search warrant, according to the release. 

Following his arrest, Robertson was transported to Waldo County Jail, where he is being held on $2,500 cash bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Waldo County Superior Court April 14. 

The release notes that the arrest “follows other similar tire thefts recently, in Belfast and neighboring communities.”

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
