Wardens continue search for missing boaters in Aroostook County
The search for two missing boaters continues today in Aroostook County. A game warden pilot is scanning from the air this morning to evaluate the water surface and any points of interest for divers. The Maine Warden Service Dive Team will be using side scan sonar today to grid search areas of the lake bottom.
Game wardens, divers and a Warden Service aircraft have been at Square Lake since early yesterday to search for four overdue boaters who had gone fishing. Charles Guimond, 23, from Fort Fairfield, drifted to the shore of Square Lake and was found alive at daybreak yesterday morning by game wardens. The body of Martin Chambers, 56, also from Fort Fairfield, was recovered yesterday afternoon by game wardens. The body was located in shallow water between Salmon Point and Goddard Cove on the lakes southeastern shore.
The remaining two men have not been located but have been identified as Eric Sherwood, 43, and Mark Chambers, 51, both from Fort Fairfield. Mark Chambers and Martin Chambers are brothers. The four men were in a 12-foot boat with motor and had planned to fish the thoroughfare between Square Lake and Eagle Lake Tuesday afternoon, June 13t.
At approximately 4 p.m., Tuesday, the boat began to take on water in very windy conditions. The men clung to the drifting boat until dark. Guimond was wearing a lifejacket and eventually made it to shore alive when he was found yesterday morning. It is presumed that Eric Sherwood and Mark Chambers were not wearing lifejackets and did not survive the cold water temperatures.
Water surface temperatures are near 58 degrees and high winds have made searching the lake difficult. This incident brings Maine’s boating -elated deaths this year to 10. The media has been asked to stage at Burnt Landing Boat Launch on Square Lake. Game Warden Sergeant Dan Menard will be the contact on scene. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
Maine’s waterways remain dangerously cold and those who recreate on the water are strongly encouraged to wear a lifejacket.
