Waldoboro Police officer completes training for student drug abuse education program
WALDOBORO — Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde announced in a press release that Officer Larry Hesseltine has successfully completed the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) officer training in Concord, N.H. on Dec. 11. Hesseltine began teaching the D.A.R.E. program at the Miller School in Waldoboro, replacing Chief Bill Labombarde, on Feb. 26.
“Hesseltine has been very active with Special Olympics Maine and the Law Enforcement Torch Run. He is extremely enthusiastic about starting his program this year and looks forward to being involved with the youths in our community”, said Labombarde.
D.A.R.E. is a 10-week-long, interactive program, conducted in the classroom between fifth grade students and a D.A.R.E. officer. Although D.A.R.E. teaches about the harmful effects of drugs and substance abuse; it focuses more on making good, quality decisions, understanding risk and reward and thinking things through to help make healthy choices. D.A.R.E. also has an anti-bullying component to the curriculum.
