Updated: Police document arrest of Camden man charged with criminal threatening with a weapon

CAMDEN — Police from around Knox County Tuesday evening responded to Camden, where there had been a report of a domestic incident and before officers arrived on scene an armed man fled the residence on foot, according to Camden Police Chief Randy Gagne.
Following a search of the yards between Virginia Avenue and Limerock and Union streets, police found and apprehended Dylan M. Urquhart, 26, of Camden. Following an investigation into the incident, Urquhart was placed under arrest and charged with domestic violence criminal threatening with a weapon (handgun), domestic violence assault and carrying a concealed weapon (handgun)
Around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Camden Sgt. Dan Brown and officers Tim Davis and Jeff Boudreau responded to a call about a domestic incident on Virginia Avenue. Before they arrived, the man, later identified as Urquhart, fled on foot so they set up a perimeter, along with officers from Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Maine Warden Service, Rockport Police Department and Maine State Police. Traffic was blocked from traveling along Union Street and Limerock Street for a brief period between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
Gagne said the male fled between Union and Limerock streets, near EBS Building Supplies, and was eventually apprehended about 20 minutes after the 911 call. After his capture, Urquhart was brought out of the wooded area behind the residences and into the parking lot of Coastal Opportunities, with his hands cuffed behind his back.
"He was taken into custody with a loaded handgun on his person," said Gagne.
Urquhart was taken to Knox County Jail and bail was set at $25,000 cash.
According to documents filed in Knox County District Court following Urquhart's arrest, the 911 caller reported that Urquhart had assaulted two family members, as well as knocked over a baby carriage with an infant inside it.
The caller also reported that Urquhart made statements that he wanted police to shoot him when they arrived. Urquhart had alleged gone upstairs and retrieved a black handgun, and had threatened to shoot one of the family members, in addition to himself.
When the Camden police officers arrived on scene, they set up a safe distance from the residence on Virginia Avenue and awaited the arrival of the State Police Tactical Team as they believed they had a barricaded armed subject in the house with potentially two hostages.
According to the court document, Sgt. Brown said he looked in the direction of the house the armed man was in and saw "another, male subject" standing in the road on Limerock Street and heading toward the suspect residence. Lacking a suspect description, Brown said his first thought was that this was a curious bystander so he went to where he last saw him to caution and remove him from the area.
This put Brown near the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Limerock Street, at the Coastal Opportunities parking lot.
"At first I did not see where the male went, but then I found him near the tree line walking back toward the street where I was," said Brown in the court document. "He was wearing a grey sweatshirt, jeans and sneakers. I could also see that there was something very heavy, large and square in his sweatshirt front pocket."
Brown said it did not take long to figure out that he was talking to Urquhart, and that he had left the Virginia Avenue residence.
Brown said he was also fairly certain the object in Urquhart's sweatshirt pocket was a firearm.
"Dylan was protective of it. Dylan's hands a couple of times went in the direction of the pocket, but I told him to keep his hands where I could see them,” said Brown in the court document.
After talking, and then haggling over a lighter for Urquhart's unlit cigarette, Brown said he kept trying to get closer to him but felt that if he drew his weapon, that would give Urquhart the "justification that he wanted to pull his and I would then have to shoot him."
"Had he reached to the pocket, that's exactly what would have happened," said Brown in the court document.
While still haggling about the lighter, Brown said that deputies Spear and Elwell moved closer to the he and Urquhart, prompting Urquhart to say that "Spear wanted to shoot him." Brown said that he was able to get within 30 feet or so of Urquhart, when he gave up on trying to get the lighter and turned and started back toward the house.
Brown said he deployed his Taser, but the distance between them was too great so it failed. Then the three deputies and Urquhart started running toward the tree line, with Spear getting close enough first to tackle him.
"We ended up in a pile in the brush with Dylan on the bottom," said Brown. "Spear and I handcuffed Dylan and began to search him. Dep. Spear loudly said 'gun'...then removed a Ruger semi-automatic pistol from Dylan's sweatshirt pocket."
While clearing the pistol to make it safe, they found it had a full loaded magazine and a round in the chamber, ready to fire, according to the court document.
During the investigation, Brown learned that Urquhart had allegedly come home angry, threw the victim against the refrigerator, grabbed them by the throat and threatened to "blow her (expletive) head off." It was at that moment that Urquhart ran upstairs and allegedly came back downstairs with the handgun and ammunition.
Fearing they would be shot by Urquhart, the victim grabbed the infant and ran from the house to a residence on Curtis Avenue and called 911.
