THOMASTON — Owners of five vehicles in Thomaston awoke Sunday morning, May 26, to find that their vehicles had been entered during the night. 

In those cases, the perpetrators only rummaged through the interiors, according to Thomaston Police Chief Tim Hoppe. No items were reported stolen. 

Though vehicle break-ins aren’t frequently documented in the media, the break-ins happen a lot, he said, adding, “Some people don’t even know it.” 

Owners often leave their cars unlocked. Sometimes they leave their keys in the car.

Thieves look for drugs, medication, money, and anything of value, 

Between March 22 and March 24, three Belfast residents reported items askew in their vehicles, with only loose change missing. 

On March 25, Rockland police charged a man who allegedly conducted multiple car burglaries in a neighborhood of Rockland. According to police, that man only stole “light change” from the vehicles, leaving electronics untouched. 

In January, a person stole purses, wallets, and other valuables from vehicles in Rockport.

All leading to Hoppe’s plea to the public:

“Keep your cars locked,” he said. “Be vigilant.”
