Running for the Fallen Game Wardens
The eighth Annual Fallen Game Warden Tribute Run established to bring awareness to Maine’s 15 game wardens that have died in the line of duty since the bureau was established back in 1880. Beginning at 10 a.m. at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro, nearly 40 runners that included marine patrol officers, US Fish and Wildlife Officers, a corrections officer, and Maine game wardens made the 14-mile trek to the Fallen Officer Memorial in Augusta.
At each mile marker, one fallen game warden was honored, and a ribbon in their name is attached to a flag commemorating their sacrifice; this flag was carried the entire length of the run. At approximately 1 p.m., runners arrived in Augusta and were greeted by family and friends of the fallen wardens, as well as a brief ceremony.
