Rockland library offers passes for adult cardholders
The Rockland Public Library is offering passes for their adult cardholders to Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Owls Head Transportation Museum, Maine State Parks, Boothbay Railway Village, and Maine Maritime Museum, thanks to funding from the Rockland Public Library Endowment Association.
Patrons may stop by the Library, email refdesk@rocklandmaine.gov, or call 207-594-0310 to book their visit or reserve the pass. Patrons must pick up the tickets or passes at the Library.
The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay includes than 300 acres of gardens and natural spaces, including a Native Butterfly and Moth House, Children’s Garden, and Rhododendron and Perennial Garden. The pass is reserved for a specific date and is good for up to two adults and any number of children, for either a morning or afternoon time slot. The Gardens are open daily from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m through October 19.
The Boothbay Railway Village pass is good for up to two adults and any number of children and is reserved for a specific date. Located in Boothbay, they are open weekends only through June 15 and then 10A-5PM Tuesday through Sunday. The Museum includes an authentic steam locomotive surrounded by historic Maine buildings preserved in a recreated village, and a collection of 60 antique autos.
The Maine State Park pass can be checked out for a week and admits occupants of up to a 17-passenger vehicle to day-use facilities of Maine State Parks and Historic Sites. There are 48 State Parks and Historic Sites, including coastal, lakeside, riverside and waterway, rolling hills and mountain, and island.
The Owls Head Transportation Museum pass can be checked out for three days and is good for one adult and the children in their household. There are two passes available. The Museum is open daily from 10-4. Their collection includes more than 150 rare and beautifully restored ground vehicles, aircraft, bicycles, motorcycles, engines, and related artifacts. Special exhibitions include: Women Who Dare; Pedaling to Progress, and Road to Vacationland.
The Maine Maritime Museum Pass is reserved for a specific date and is good for up to 8 adults (kids 17 and under are free). Their 20-acre campus on the banks of the Kennebec River is located in Bath and they are open Monday – Sunday 9:30 am – 5:00 pm (Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year’s Day, and occasionally if we get some weather.) The museum includes the country’s only surviving shipyard where large wooden sailing vessels were once built. Many of the original buildings in the shipyard are preserved. Indoor exhibits explore the incredible stories of people who have lived, worked, or played on Maine’s waters. Visitors can experience what it takes to care for a lighthouse, make a living in the lobster fishery, or build a navy destroyer. Paintings, scrimshaw, and souvenirs that sailors brought back home after voyages around the world are also on display.
"These items serve as a great reminder that the Library offers more than books," said RPL, in a news release.
Adult Cardholders can also borrow binoculars, an Orion StarBlast Telescope, a thermal imaging camera, “Kill a Watt” energy usage monitor and more. eBooks and audio books are available to download from Cloud Library and on hoopla.
"Of course, the Library has a wonderful collection of books, too, as well as the service of borrowing millions more items through Interlibrary Loan," said RPL.
Rockland Library cards are free for Rockland residents and property owners (as the library is funded mostly by their tax dollars), and $25 for a three month or $45 for an annual non-resident card.
