Powerful thunderstorms dump rain and hail, fill Camden streets with muddy water

A relentless downpour from strong thunderstorms crossing from East Penobscot Bay to West Penobscot Bay drenched Camden Saturday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. Runoff from parking lots, sidewalks and streets poured downhill toward the ocean, gathering brown silt and pooling in small ponds.
Drivers were suddenly met with deep puddles as their vehicles dragged through the water, sending spray high into the air.
Hail was heavy, and pedestrians were caught in the deluge, some sprinting toward cover, others gamely raising umbrellas. One homeowner called the Camden Fire Department for assistance with a flooded basement.
The weather system will lift, and skies are to clear, although showers and a chance of thunderstorms will build again on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
