Maria J. King art on display in June at Rockland Public Library
For the month of June, the Rockland Public Library’s display cases feature the works of Maria J. King, consisting of art-inspired tableaux in the form of shadow boxes.
The term “shadow box” originally referred to a box containing a sailor's mementos (i.e. his shadow) of his time on a ship. Intrigued with the idea and inspired by the tableaux vivants (static scenes containing one or more actors or models), she began to fill boxes with images she cherishes.
Her boxes are created with printed artworks (paintings, drawings, photographs, stills, and digitally manipulated images), arranged into various themes, often literature or artist related.
A focus through the exhibition will be transformed images of digital works by the local artist Joan Proudman of Freedom and portraits by the Polish symbolist painter Jacek Malczewski (MAL-CHEV-SKI).
Announcements about other venues throughout the year, can be found on King's Facebook page: Maria Julia King (Goat Spirit Farm). When not on exhibition, her work can be viewed by appointment in her private museum in Liberty. She can be contacted at mylynx33@protonmail.com.
