Maine DOT outlines pending Knox County road, pathways, airport, bridge projects
AUGUSTA – Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan has been released and it includes a variety of highway, airport, bridge and ferry upgrades for Knox County.
According to the MDOT, the work plan includes more than $2.3 billion worth of construction and maintenance, of which $511.1 million is scheduled for 604 capital projects in 2018. The three-year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 229 miles of highway construction; 1,128 miles of pavement preservation; 1,800 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 240 spot and safety improvements; and 260 bridge construction projects.
Sen. Dave Miramant, D-Camden, stressed the importance of funding for the MDOT work plan and its investment to Knox County in a news release, saying: “As a member of the Transportation committee in the Legislature, I am pleased with the list of investments in Knox County. I hope that this outline is helpful to local officials and anyone interested in upcoming projects in the area.”
The planned capital and maintenance work for some communities in the region through 2020 include:
Bicycle and Pedestrian Capital Projects
This year, the Work Plan adds approximately $4.7 million in new funding for bicycle and pedestrian facilities, consisting of approximately $2.8 million in federal Transportation Alternatives funding, $1.5 million in state funds, and more than $400 thousand in matching funds from towns and cities. Projects and initiatives include sidewalk construction, bicycle/pedestrian shared facilities, crossing improvements, and bicycle and pedestrian safety improvement. Also of special note in this Work Plan is about $3.7 million to complete an important section of the Eastern Trail in Scarborough and South Portland, which will include over $3.1 million from MaineDOT, with the remaining funds coming from local and private contributions.
The DOT will also direct $606,000 to a Camden- Rockport Bicycle-Pedestrian Trail, On-Road New Construction, on Route 1, beginning at Quarry Hill Road extending south 0.36 of a mile to Maritime Farm.
Aviation
- Knox County Regional Airport: Safety and infrastructure improvements that may include Runway 13-31 extension - Phase 2 and an FAA reimbursable agreement for the reconstruction of Runway 13-31 at the Knox County Regional Airport (RKD).
Bridge Work
- Vinalhaven: Lane Island Bridge over Tidal Flow.
- Warren: Replacing the curb, posts and bridge rails and repairing the wing walls on the Kalloch Bridge over the Back River.
Highway Paving
- Warren, Route 1: Beginning 0.06 of a mile east of Camden Road and extending southeasterly 1.79 miles.
- Warren, Route 90: Beginning at Route 1 and extending east 3.62 miles.
Highway Safety and Maintenance
- Appleton: Ditching and replacing nine culverts on Route 105 in Appleton beginning 0.25 of a mile east of the Liberty/Appleton town line extending easterly to the Route 131 intersection.
- Appleton/Camden/Hope: Replacing three cross culverts on Route 105 in Hope and Appleton.
- Camden: Ditching and culvert replacement and catch basin repair on Route 1 beginning at the Rockport/Camden town line extending 22.12 miles to the Porter Road in Belfast.
- Camden: Located 0.03 of a mile northeast of Harden Avenue.
- Cushing: Ditching and replacing culverts beginning 0.02 of a mile south of Old Settlers Lane in Cushing extending northerly 2.5 miles to the Cushing/Thomaston town line.
- Friendship: Grader ditching on Route 220 beginning in Friendship at the Route 97 intersection extending north 9 miles to 0.28 of a mile southerly of Pleasant Street in Waldoboro.
- Owl’s Head: Large culvert located 0.05 of a mile north of North Shore Drive.
- St. George/South Thomaston: Replacing thirteen culverts and incidental ditching beginning at the River Road intersection in Saint George extending east then northerly for 3.06 miles to the Island Road intersection in South Thomaston.
- St. George: Large culvert located 0.62 of a mile west of Glenmere Road.
- Thomaston/Union: Ditching on Route 131 beginning at the Route 1 intersection in Thomaston extending north 8.09 miles to the Warren/Union town line.
- Warren: Large culvert located 0.06 of a mile north of the Waldoboro town line.
Ferry
- Rockland Ferry Service: Parking lot reconfiguration including expansion and crack seal at the Maine State Ferry Service (MSFS).
