17-year-old driver in critical condition following single-car crash in Warren
WARREN — A teenager driver is in critical condition Tuesday evening following a serious car crash on Finntown Road in Warren.
The accident occurred around 1:37 p.m. on April 12, and Warren Fire and Rescue responded to the call, along with Waldoboro EMS and deputies from the Knox County Sheriff's Office.
According to Chief Deputy Tim Carroll, two juveniles, the 17-year-old driver and a 16-year-old passenger, were in a 1991 Toyota Corolla heading north on Finntown Road when the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve in the road.
The Toyota slid off the road and sideswiped a large tree, becoming airborne and crushing part of its roof down into the vehicle compartment.
In a news release Tuesday evening, Carroll said the two occupants, who are not being identified because they are juveniles, became trapped inside the car. They both had to be extricated from the car, and were transported to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
Carroll said the operator sustained serious, life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash, and was listed in critical condition. The passenger suffered minor injuries. Both families have since been notified.
The cause is of the crash is being blamed on speed and driver inexperience, said Carroll.
