Waldoboro Police beat: Officer shooting, accidents, stolen kayak

    WALDOBORO — Waldoboro police responded to 117 calls for service from Jan. 17-24. Listed below are a few of the highlights. An arrest or summons does not apply guilt. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. 

    Jan. 17 

    Daniel Benner, 35, of Waldoboro, was arrested by Officer Thomas Bartunek on a probation violation.

    Jan. 18                                

    Officer Larry Hesseltine is investigating a complaint from a citizen of an attempted scam. 

    Jan. 19                                   

    Hesseltine investigated an accident at the Sunset Ridge Rd/Controversy Road intersection at 9:30 a.m. Victoria Austin, 40, of Waldoboro, was driving a 2012 GMC utility vehicle. Austin was traveling eastbound on Sunset Ridge Road, following the roadway when she lost control due to snow and ice, crossed Controversy Road and struck a guide wire, causing damage to her vehicle.  

    Sgt. Jamie Wilson is investigating a report from a citizen of the theft of her purse. 

    Jan. 21                        

    Officer Jeffery Fuller investigated a report from a citizen of the theft of his kayak. The subject was located and the kayak was returned.                                               

    Wilson is investigating a report from a citizen of harassment on Facebook. 

    Jan. 22

    Shooting of Officer John Lash and a Waldoboro resident is dead following a gunfire exchange. Chief William Labombarde sent a press release and statement to the media.  

    Jan. 23 

    Fuller is investigating a report from a citizen of criminal mischief to his mailbox. 

    Jan. 24 

    Hesseltine investigated an accident on Depot Street at 6:30 a.m. Desiree Munro, 27, of Thomaston, was driving a 2002 Chrysler sedan. Munro was traveling southbound, following the roadway and lost control on the snow and ice covered roadway. Munro’s vehicle went off the road and into a utility pole. Injuries were reported.                       

    Hesseltine investigated an accident on Washington Road at 10:40 a.m. Anthony Venti, 66, of Union, was driving a 2007 Ford sedan. Venti was traveling southbound, overtaking a passing vehicle, drove too fast for conditions, lost control and went off the southbound side of the road striking trees. No injuries were reported.
