UPDATE: Eastern Road fire takes toll on already burdened house

Mon, 03/25/2024 - 3:45pm

Update, March 25, 3:45 p.m. — Almost 24 hours after fire was reported at 1406 Eastern Road, in Warren, investigators continue work to determine the fire’s cause. The homeowner was not at home at the time, according to Warren Fire Chief Greg Andrews, but arrived soon after the approximate 5:15 p.m. call to 9-1-1.

As firefighters pushed their way into the smoke-filled two-story structure, they encountered fire in an ell region of the kitchen. As they extinguished the blaze before them, the crews also traced flames up into a room above the kitchen.

Meanwhile, firefighters working from the exterior set up a water supply unit on the road on the north side of the house. However, the stretch of road proved too narrow to accommodate both the catch-basin method of water supply and Waldoboro FD’s ladder truck in front of the house. Since the ladder was considered more important at the moment, the water supply basin was disassembled, electing instead to fill truck tanks at the Warren Fire Station, as needed.

“As it turned out we had enough water in tanks to extinguish the fire,” said Andrews.

Beyond the kitchen and the story above, the rest of the house sustained smoke damage.

The structure as a whole is not considered a total loss.

WARREN — Homeowners on the Eastern Road in Warren who were forced to rebuild their front walls after a pickup truck crashed into the house 13 months ago are now dealing with fire damage to the rear of the same dwelling.

An investigator from the Fire Marshal’s Office arrived at 1406 Eastern Road after firefighters from Warren, Waldoboro, and Union responded to pager alerts of the fire at 5:18 p.m. For a couple of hours, responders worked to knock down flames at the rear, as well as ventilate smoke throughout the two-story structure, creating holes in the roof and then disposing of insulation.

Waldoboro and Union firefighters cleared the scene shortly before 9 p.m., and all remaining Warren units cleared at 9:37 p.m.

This fire came on a day when several other possible structure fires were reported in the area. Union and Hope FD investigated a report of odor at a Heald Highway location that eventually was deemed unfounded. Union firefighters with SCBA certification were then requested in Appleton on Peasetown Road, where Appleton FD was investigating a fire. Meanwhile, a report of possible fire produced a response to Lincolnville for LFD and its mutual aid.

Thomaston, Warren, and Rockport FD also received calls for service either in their own towns or as mutual aid before being cancelled.

In the evening, while Warren and its aid worked at Eastern Rd, a report of smoke on North Main Street in Rockland instigated a mutual response from Rockport and Camden, though Camden was cancelled before arrival.

Calls continued into the night as Lincolnville, Hope, and Camden dealt with a chimney fire in Lincolnville after 11 p.m.

At 3:20 a.m., Monday, March 25, Thomaston FD, EMS, and police were called to a single vehicle rollover on Old County Road. The occupants of the vehicle were seen by witnesses to be fleeing the scene, producing assistance from Rockland PD and the drone belonging to Rockland Fire and EMS. The vehicle was determined to have been stolen from a Rockland residence.
