The Lynx of Lincolnville played a dominating game against a competitive team from Jefferson at Lincolnville on Thursday, Oct. 13, to clinch the number one spot in the league going into the playoffs by a score of 4-0. LCS played a fine game on all parts of the field: a strong, aggressive defense, a swift and dominating midfield, and an offense that moved the ball extremely well to find the open player for each shot. And this despite the aggressive, tough play of the Jefferson eleven.

The Lynx put their first tally on the board at the five-minute mark after striker Yonah Wienges was tripped in the Jefferson box for a penalty kick. Keeper Matt Kremin trotted up field, calmly teed the ball up, and coolly blasted it past the Jefferson goalie. It took another nine minutes for the Lynx to find the net again, this time with Wienges passing the ball to winger Jackson Bernier on the left. Bernier slid a nice shot in to find the back of the nets. Bernier followed that up three minutes later with a blast from the left with very little angle slipping the ball between the keeper and the near post in a fine exhibition of placement shooting. The pass was provided by LCS’s highly skilled midfielder, Eric Andrews. Meanwhile at the other end of the field, the defense, led by sweeper Wyatt Munson and stopper Owen Markowitz were successfully blunting many of Jefferson’s thrusts up field. What the D did not stop was handled with his usual panache by Kremin, whose fine play in the nets racked up his sixth shutout of the season, tying the teams record—also set by Kremin last year—of six shutouts in a season.

The second half featured far fewer scores with a lot of tries by both sides, but the LCS squad still held an edge in possession and overall play. The sole score of the half came at the 44-minute mark when winger Joey LaChance alertly sent a ball into Wienges who faked outside before cutting inside to lose his coverage and finished with an excellent shot that arced over the keeper and nestled into the nets just inside the far post. The Lynx now head into the playoffs assured of home field advantage for as long as they are in them. They will begin their attempt to win a second tournament championship in a row this coming Monday at Lincolnville against a team yet to be determined.
