Music, merrymaking, Santa, happy hour, tree lighting and fireworks

Lighting up the village with Rockport’s Holiday on the Harbor, Dec. 13

Fri, 12/12/2014 - 2:00pm

ROCKPORT — Rockport Village will be lively Saturday, Dec. 13, with music, good cheer and fireworks as the town celebrates its fourth annual Holiday on the Harbor. Lobster boats will glimmer, decked out with lights; more than 1,000 luminaries will line the streets; and, there will be caroling around the tree at Marine Park.Come dusk, a grand fireworks show will explode over the harbor.

“This brings the Rockport community together with Christmas in a way it has never been done before,” said Rockport Select Board member Charlton Ames. “We get to celebrate new things happening in town, as well as the old.”

The new includes Union Hall, and the community space there that will host Santa Claus Saturday afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m., and through the evening. Children will be able to have photos taken with Santa there, or to just chat with him. And, there will be fiddlers, hot chocolate and cupcakes at Union Hall, as well as children’s music and art activities.

Up the street, the old — Rockport Opera House — where Bay Chamber Concerts will again feature the New York-based Songs of Solomon Gospel Choir, whose singers wowed the community last year with their exuberant spirit. The concert begins at 3 p.m. Tickets are $25 ($10 under 21) and are available at baychamberconcerts.org or by calling (207) 236-2823.

The Holiday on the Harbor celebration officially begins at 1 p.m., with cookies, cider, and children's activities at the Rockport Public Library.

RAYR wine shop, on Pascal Ave., will host a wine tasting at 2 p.m. Throughout the village and along Pascal Ave. to Hoboken Gardens, stores will be open for holiday shopping, with special offers and raffles. Salt Water Farm will host happy hour, and later in the evening, Shepherd’s Pie will close out with a reverse happy hour.

At 5 p.m., the community will gather at Marine Park to sing carols and light the Christmas tree. Soon after, the fireworks will begin. There will be more than one bonfire at the harbor this year, in case it is as cold as last year (but there’s no way it could be). If people do get chilled, they can watch the fireworks from Union Hall, whose large windows overlook the harbor.

“A winter celebration is something new for Rockport, at least historically,” said Ames. “I see it as bringing the community together in a very festive way.”

Ames is spearheading the fireworks show, with coordinator Donald Heald IV. Last year’s fireworks show went down in history as spectacular. This year, the show promises even more energy, packed into a shorter time frame.

“We are very ambitious with the fireworks program,” said Ames.

Holiday on the Harbor is an all-volunteer effort, “which has resonated with the staff of the town,” said Ames. “The volunteers appreciate the town staff and vice versa.”

“It is going to be fun,” said Rockport Harbor Master Abbie Leonard, who works with Public Safety Director Mike Young to pull the event together. They are helped by Ames, Peter Ralston, Debbie Chatfield, Jason Haynes and Monica Kelly.

    Don’t miss it.
