Tribal Elder to present animated adaptation of 'Mary and Molly'
Donna Loring, noted Penobscot Nation Tribal Elder, activist and author, will present the animated adaptation of “Mary and Molly”, a short film based on her 2016 play of the same title on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 6:30 p.m., at the Thomaston Public Library.
A panel discussion with Loring, co-director David Camlin and casting and dialog director Margo Lukens, will follow the screening.
This collaborative community event, co-sponsored by Cushing and Thomaston Public Libraries, is free and open to the public.
The film chronicles the story of Mary, a young African-American woman from Bangor, who discovers a letter on her 21 st birthday from her mother that contains a surprising revelation. Mary learns she also has Penobscot heritage, but her parents had decided not to give her this knowledge. Mary begins to investigate this, and becomes aware of Molly Molasses, her Penobscot Ancestor. Through Molly, Mary begins the journey of connecting with her Penobscot heritage.
