VINALHAVEN — Joseph Bernard Bowman, 74, died Sept. 23, 2014, at his home in Vinalhaven. He was born Oct. 17, 1939, in Baltimore, Md., and was the son of Hubert H. and Mary B. (Koppleman) Bowman.

He was a graduate of Loyola University in Baltimore, Md., and married Roberta Conway of Vinalhaven on May 24, 1969.

Joe and Roberta lived in Baltimore for many years, where he worked as a purchasing agent for industrial suppliers. Although his heart always longed to live in Vinalhaven, in Maryland he lived a very active life and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Wilson Point Men's Club, the Garden Villa Club, Sports Car Club of America and the Chesapeake Sports Car Club. Joe loved the Boy Scouts of American and was an active member and leader with youth and adult programs.

Joe retired in 2004 and they moved to Vinalhaven. He loved attending town meetings, being involved in island life and enjoying the natural beauty of living there.

Surviving is his wife, Roberta Conway Bowman of Vinalhaven; three sons, Robert Bowman and his wife, Stephanie, of Jacobus, Pa., Brian Bowman and Gene Snyder and his wife, Barbara, all of Baltimore, Md.; his grandsons, Jacob and Brady Bowman; his granddaughters, Trystin, Ashlyn and Sydney Snyder; a sister, Mary Halpin of Baltimore, Md.; his nephews, Christopher Halpin and David Halpin; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Conway of Hagerstown, Md.

There are no services planned and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
