CAMDEN — Camden Opera House opens the New Year, and caps the holiday season, with “Miracle on 34th Street” Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. Everyman Repertory Theatre offers this one-hour Lux Radio Theatre-style presentation as part of the opera house’s popular SoundCheck series.

As Jan. 5 is the 11th Day of Christmas, this holiday favorite is indeed a Santa tale, first introduced as a 1947 film starring Edmund Gwenn based on a story by Valentine Davies. The Lux Radio Theatre adaptation after the film’s release had stars Gwenn, Maureen O’Hara, John Payne and a young Natalie Wood at the microphone.

Like the original radio show, Everyman’s presentation includes Hollywood-studded commercials for Lux Toilet Soap. Ryan Jackson is featured as Kris Kringle, along with John Jurcheck as Fred, Jennifer Hodgson as Doris and Beverly Scott as Susan. Multiple other characters are played by Joseph Coté, Dagney Ernest, Andrea Itkin, Dean Jorgenson, Scott Anthony Smith, Jan Zimmerman and Paul Hodgson, who also directs and adapted the script. David Berez and Geoffrey Parker provide sound effects.

Choose-your-own reserved tickets are $10, available in advance via camdenoperahouse.com or 236-3154. Doors and box office of Camden Opera House, 29 Elm St., will open at 7 p.m.

SoundCheck shows are recorded and later uploaded to the opera house’s YouTube Channel.
