BELFAST — Folk troubadour Connor Garvey and piano wizard Ben Cosgrove combine forces Thursday, January 11, 2024, at the Underground Lounge.

“Cosgrove’s ethereal pieces are propulsive yet calming, deriving their spark from the landscapes he encounters in his itinerant lifestyle,” said the Underground Lounge, in a news release. “The Boston Globe recently mused that Cosgrove ‘uses his piano as a paintbrush,’ transforming natural environments into music. This has led to the unique distinction of being hired by NASA as well as several National Parks to compose music for them. People have taken notice; Ken Burns recently had him write for his latest documentary The American Buffalo. Cosgrove’s new album Bearings, released in October, features intricately miked pianos, often prepared with felt to dampen the hammer strikes, which showcase his prodigious skill.”
 
Award-winning songwriter Garvey is an engaging performer who can hold audiences rapt merely with his between-songs patter, according to the Underground.

“A Portland-based veteran of the coffeehouse scene, he deftly weaves stories filled with pathos, backed by a confident guitar and clear tenor; Glide magazine praised his ‘lyrics that get to the core of some of our most vulnerable feelings.’ His most recent album, Another End of a Year, features Cosgrove (and Underground Lounge alum Sorcha Cribben-Merrill) among a group of excellent musicians creating a lush, moving soundscape.”
 
Ben Cosgrove will begin the evening with his solo piano work and then join Connor Garvey for the latter’s second set. It all happens at the Underground Lounge on Thursday, January 11, in the basement of the Belfast Maskers Theatre, at 17 Court Street. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the show starts at 7 p.m.
