C. Bryce Smallwood, obituary

THOMASTON — C. Bryce Smallwood, 77, died Dec. 7, 2014, at his home following an extended illness.

Born in Rockland on Jan. 30, 1937, he was the son of Raymond and Genevieve Lindsey Smallwood, and stepson of Wesley L. McGibney.

Educated in local schools, he was a 1954 graduate of Rockland High School. Having entered the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve while still in high school, Bryce served from 1954 to 1955. On June 27, 1955, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He worked as a weapons mechanic with the 48th Fighter Interceptor Squadron until his honorable discharge June 26, 1963.

On June 23, 1962, he married Carolyn M. Littlehale in Thomaston.

Bryce designed and sold kitchens as a career – he gained a reputation second to none.

He enjoyed summers in Washington at his cottage, which he and Carolyn built from the ground up. He took joy in traveling with his wife to visit family and friends in Florida, California, Missouri and Bermuda, among many other places. He always had a camera in his hands to capture the special memories. Bryce was most proud of his many years of military service. He loved to volunteer his time helping others, doing all this with a positive attitude and BIG smile.

He was a member of Aurora Lodge of Masons No. 50 in Rockland, the Scottish Rite Bodies, York Rite Bodies and Kora Temple Shrine. Bryce was a long-time member and past president of Mid-Coast Shrine Club, a member of Portland Shrine Club, Waldo County Shrine Club and Put Stevens Court 107, Royal Order of Jesters.

He was a life member of the Winslow-Holbrook-Merritt American Legion, Post No. 1 Rockland, Rockland Lodge of Elks, No. 1008 and Sampson Air Force Base Veterans Association. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Chapter No. 277, the 48th Fighter Squadron Association and the Retired United States Coast Guard Association. He was also a proud life member of the NRA. Not only was Bryce a member of these organizations, but he worked tirelessly to support all of them.

In addition to his parents, Bryce was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carolyn, on Sept. 14, 2013; and a son-in-law, Harry F. Roberts Jr. on July 13, 2000. He is survived by two sons, Craig B. Smallwood II of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Ronald Makie and his wife, Marion, of Owls Head; two daughters, Debra Roberts of Winter Springs, Fla., and Kathy Stenger and her husband, Tim, of Cocoa, Fla.; three brothers, Leslie Smallwood of Casselberry, Fla., Brian Smallwood and his wife, Cherry, of Charlotte, N.C., and Raymond Smallwood of Killeen, Texas; two sisters, Donna Achorn and her husband, Ronald, of Washington, Maine and Florida, and Laurel M. Ames of Thomaston; his grandchildren, Travis Makie, Todd Makie and his wife, Sarah, Jamie Hall and his wife, Kelly, Sam Hall, Heather Olsen and her husband, Jeff, and Amanda Mathews and her husband, Jeff; his great-grandchildren, Kara, Alex, Erin, Ryan, Casey, Sophie, Sydney, Jackie, Charley, Karissa, Madison, Olivia, Julia, Kahlan and Malina; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Thursday, Dec. 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland, where a Masonic Service will be conducted at 6 p.m. followed by an Elks Service of Remembrance. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at Friday, Dec. 12, at 11a.m. The Rev. Wayne Sawyer will officiate. A reception will follow at American Legion Post No. 1, 336 Limerock St. in Rockland. Private interment will be in Achorn Cemetery in Rockland.
