Learn About the Shakers of Sabbathday Lake at The Lincoln Home

Event has passed

Have you ever wondered about Shaker traditions and history?  Join us and Shaker Village director, Leonard Brooks, who will share a slide show depicting Shaker life in Maine from the late 1800’s to the 1920’s. Sabbathday Lake was one of the numerically smallest and poorest of the eastern Shaker Communities. Today Sabbathday Lake is the only active Shaker Community, and strives to live a life of work and worship. The Community presently consists of eighteen buildings located on 1,800 acres of land. They maintain a tree farm, apple orchard, vegetable gardens, commercial herb garden, hay fields, pastures, a flock of sheep, and a variety of livestock. Other occupations include manufacturing of fancy goods, basket making, weaving, printing, and the manufacturing of some small woodenware.

Join us Monday, April 13, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, in our beautiful living room overlooking the Damariscotta River. The public is always welcome to our free and educational events. The Lincoln Home is located at 22 River Road, Newcastle. For more information, please contact our activities director, Rhonda Hanna, at 563-3350.
