CAMDEN — Herbert Harry Inman, 101, of Camden, passed away June 13, 2014, at Windward Gardens. Born in Enfield on June 21, 1912, he weighed only 3 pounds at birth and was the youngest of eight children born to Herbert Harold and Mary (Perkins) Inman.

The family moved to Camden in 1927 so that Herb could attend Camden High School, where he was a 1931 graduate. As a student, he drove the school bus and was also captain of the football team the last year football was an organized sport in 1931. In 2009, when the sport was reorganized, Herb was presented with a team jersey and was asked to toss the coin at the team's first varsity home game.

On Jan. 1, 1936, he married Elizabeth Thomas at the First Congregational Church in Camden. After the trolley cars stopped operating, Herb drove a bus for the Tolman Company, which ran a bus between Thomaston and Camden. During World War II, he hauled logs to the Camden Shipyard when they were constructing mine sweepers. He also worked as a construction foreman for C.H. Thomas, Inc. and constructed many homes and buildings in the area; and hauled gasoline from Bangor to Caribou.

For several years, Herb was a member of the Amity Lodge #6 and the Blue Lodge. He was also a member of the First Congregational Church UCC in Camden. Herb enjoyed hunting, fishing and planting his annual vegetable garden. Inman held the Boston Post Cane award for more than three years as Camden's oldest citizen, an award that was once held by his mother, who lived to be 102.

He was predeceased by his siblings and his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Thomas Inman. Survivors include his daughter, Lois Inman Calahan and her husband, James; a grandson, Peter Calahan; as well as an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins from the Inman and Thomas families.

A time of visitation will be held Thursday, June 19 at 2 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2:30 p.m., at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St. in Camden. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
