ROCKPORT — A Rockport man is facing charges, following a joint investigation by Rockland and Thomaston Police. Owen Hebert, 18, of Rockport, was charged with theft and burglary.

Rockland Police received an initial report that a woman’s purse was stolen from her cart while shopping at Hannaford on Sunday, July 31. The woman’s purse included her identification and house keys. 

The following morning, the woman discovered that someone had entered her home during the night, while she and her family were sleeping, and took items from inside. There was no sign of forced entry to the residence, which was locked, so it was believed that the suspect used a key, according to a news release from the Rockland Police Department.

Hannaford’s loss prevention department reviewed their surveillance video, and provided it to the Rockland Police Department. Images from the video, posted online and through media outlets, lead to Hebert being identified.

“The response from Hannaford was swift and very helpful, and the public’s assistance in identifying Hebert was phenomenal,” the release said. “The police and community working hand-in-hand is ideal, and that is what makes this such a great place to live,” said Rockland’s Chief of Police Bruce Boucher. 

The case was investigated by Rockland Officer Scott Solorzano, Detective Joel Neal and Thomaston Police Chief Kevin Haj. Hebert will be arraigned in Rockland unified court on September 19.
