Angelo Spirio, obituary
ROCKPORT —Angelo Joseph “Angie” Spirio, 95, died March 20, 2016, at Maine General Alfond Center For Health in Augusta. Born in Waltham, Mass., on Nov. 16, 1920, he was the son of Carmelo and Maria (Cuschera) Spirio and attended schools in Hardwick, Mass., where he graduated from high school.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marines and was stationed in Guam and the Phillipines. He was honorably discharged from the service and opened his own service station, which included car maintenance and repair in downtown Camden.
Angie married Annie (Rankin) Young on March 7, 1975. He worked at the Camden Community Hospital for several years and built and operated the Town Motel in Camden. Prior to retiring, Angie worked in construction.
He also served on the Building Committee for the Town of Rockport, and was a member of the VFW and the American Legion in Camden. Angie loved big band music and dancing. He was especially fond of Dean Martin.
An avid golfer, Angie was a member at both the Rockland Golf Club and Goose River Golf Course. In 1986 he shot his first hole in one at the Goose, shot his second in Rockland, and shot his age, 77 in July of 1998.
He loved the Boston Red Sox, watching and playing golf, and was an ace Scrabble player.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the many caregivers at the Maine Veteran's Home in Augusta, who took great care of Angie in his final years.
Predeceased by one sister, Theresa Renta, who died on Feb. 25, 2016; he is survived by his wife, Annie Spirio of Rockport; his daughter, Mary Killinger and her husband, John, of Largo, Fla.; his stepchildren, Judith Willis of Belfast, Nancy Kramer of Quincy, Mass., Robert Young of Westbrook, Annie May Updegrove and her husband, William, of Sacramento, Calif.; Sandra (Spirio) and her husband, Rick Arthur, of Lutz, Fla., and Carlton Spirio of Tampa, Fla.; 10 step-grandchildren; 10 step-great great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering will be held Friday, April 8 at 2 p.m. at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St. in Camden.
If desired, memorial gifts may be made to Boy's Town or the Maine Veteran's Home Activities Program.
