Christina Torres-York, obituary
WARREN — Christina "Tina" Torres-York, 45, passed away on March 18, 2016, in a tragic automobile accident in Washington.
Tina was born in Stamford, Conn., on Sept. 25, 1970, the daughter of the late Xavier Torres and the late Irene Torres. Tina grew up in Stamford and attended school there until her sophomore year in high school. In 1986, Tina's family moved to Warren, where Tina completed her high school years and graduated in 1988 from Medomak Valley High School. After high school, Tina moved to Massachusetts, where she began her college career at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill.
Tina met her husband, Kenneth "Kenny" York, in 1991 through mutual friends. They were married on Sept. 4, 1994, at the Baptist Church in Warren. The two settled in Warren to raise their three children and care for Tina's parents. Tina learned how to be a caregiver at a young age. After her mother fell ill when Tina was just in middle school, Tina became a second mother to her siblings. She helped to nurture and provide for them during their elementary years until they were teenagers. Tina also helped care for her father until his passing in 2011, and was the primary care giver for her mother until she passed in 2016.
Tina was a caring and loving mother, sister and friend. To her, family was everything. She enjoyed cooking large meals for family gatherings and holidays and hosting family picnics. She enjoyed camping with her family and watching her children at tractor pulls. She especially loved watching her children's sporting events. Tina also enjoyed scrapbooking all her family memories and making hand-made cards for loved ones. She was in training for the 2016 Tri For A Cure, to honor her mother.
Tina was an active member of the community and volunteered for multiple organizations over the years.
Tina earned her Bachelor of Science in mental health and human services through the University of Maine in Augusta and was due to graduate in May 2016. She was currently participating in an internship in which she was finding great joy in helping those who were working to overcome addiction. During her tenure at school, Tina formed new bonds with her advisers and met new friends, all of whom Tina felt became part of her extended family. Tina was looking forward to a future career in which she could help those struggling with addiction.
