Business News: Good Tern, Evergreen, Herring Gut, New England Real Estate hires
Good Tern hires new general manager
ROCKLAND — Good Tern in Rockland has hired Karen Doherty as general manager. Originally from central New York State, Doherty moved to Maine over 30 years ago, when she enrolled at College Of The Atlantic for her senior year of college. Having completed her degree in Anthropology from Syracuse University, she chose to stay in Maine where she raised two children, climbed Katahdin many times, and for ten years was the general manager of The Blue Hill Co-op.
She is excited about moving to Rockland and becoming part of the team at Good Tern Co-op.
"Co-ops are at the heart of the community, and such an important link in supporting the local economy. To me it is the business model that makes the most sense in ensuring a healthy and sustainable future for all. While not a nonprofit, a co-op exists not to make a profit, but to meet the needs of the members and the greater community.
"I am delighted to be a part of the co-op world, and so looking forward to working at Good Tern, sharing the values of community, local agriculture, people over profit, and caring for the environment. This is such an honor," Doherty said in a news release.
For fun, Doherty has hosted a 3-hour weekly radio show for more than12 years as a volunteer programmer at WERU-FM, playing an eclectic mix of indie, folk, jazz, and rock. Along with music Doherty has many other interests. "I love animals, and spending as much time as I can being in the natural world, hiking, biking, swimming, kayaking, and gardening. I equally enjoy cooking with friends, reading and listening to music," she said in the news release.
Last winter she took a trip in her 1989 VW campervan to the Yucatan Peninsula where she swam with the sea turtles.
Doherty will be joining the Good Tern in early April.
Evergreen expands team of energy advisors
PORTLAND — Evergreen Home Performance has expanded its team of Energy Advisors. Justin McEdward originally joined the company two years ago as a field technician, installing insulation improvements that save homeowners money while significantly reducing their carbon footprint and bringing economic benefits to the whole region.
Eager to engineer those improvements himself, McEdward pursued BPI-certification as a Building Envelope Specialist and now serves as an energy advisor.
“This new role is a natural step,” said McEdward in a news release. “My first-hand experience in the field has given me valuable insight into how to engineer specific solutions to address home efficiency challenges.”
McEdward’s interest in energy efficiency stems from his enthusiasm for the outdoors and his passion for sustainable living. He has a diversity of experience in outdoor education, customer service, and sales.
McEdward has made a number of efficiency upgrades to his Portland home, including air sealing and installing solar panels, and is eager to help other homeowners prioritize projects that improve their comfort and health while reducing their fuel consumption.
“I take a lot of pride in knowing that the work we do helps to improve the lives of my fellow Mainers,” said McEdward.
