Marjorie Larrabee, obituary
KNOX — Marjorie (Clements) Larrabee, 96, of Knox, passed away on March 12, 2016, at the Sussman House in Rockport. She was born in Winterport on July 20, 1919.
She graduated from Farmington Normal School and received her Bachelor or Science in education from UMO in 1963.
On July 20, 1942, Marjorie married Newton Larrabee of Thorndike. They began their married life on a small farm in Knox on Abbott Road. In 1944, they moved to a larger farm on Shibles Road in Knox. They raised their family and established the Aghaloma Farm. They were married for 36 years before he passed away. During this time, she taught school at Thorndike School, Knox Stream School and Unity Primary, mostly first-grade, for three generations of students - a total of 26 years.
Marjorie was a member of Maine Farm Bureau, Waldo County Extension Assoc., Waldo County 4-H Leaders Assoc., Leader of Little Beavers 4-H Club and Waldo County Dairy 4-H Club, and a member of Sunrise, Sunlight, Knox Station and Dirigo Granges, Waldo Pomona, Maine State Grange and the National Grange. She served on the CWA Committees at several levels and pianist to many granges for many, many years. She was pianist for Thorndike Congregational Church. Past president of Waldo County Maine Retired Teachers Assoc., Marjorie worked as town clerk for Knox for 21 years. She was also presented with the Boston Post Cane on Aug. 3, 2014, as she was and remained the oldest person in the town of Knox.
Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Newton Larrabee; her mother, Agnes (Young) Clements; her father, Harold Clements; her brother, Basil; her sister-in-law, Ernell Clements; and a son-in-law, Laurice (Larry) Ward.
Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Robert (Agnes) Nelson of Thorndike; her son, Harold; and her daughter-in-law, Joyce of Knox; her daughters, Mrs. Robert (Lona) Bourassa of Smithfield and Florida and Mrs. David (Marilyn) Schofield of Knox; and a son, Galen and daughter-in-law, Gert Larrabee of Knox; also two sisters-in-law, June Mitchell and Mabel Larrabee; a brother-in-law, Hurley Larrabee; and sister-in-law, Kay; 17 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 18 great great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Marjorie was loved by so many and will be missed greatly by all of her family and friends.
Friends may call on Friday, March 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave. in Belfast. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 26 at 11 a.m. at Knox Ridge Baptist Church. Following the service, there will be a gathering at the Larrabee Building on Shibles Road in Knox. A private burial will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Winterport.
