Four teens injured in Camden when vehicle slams into tree on Hosmer Pond Road
CAMDEN — Four teenage boys, two from Rockport and two from Camden, were injured in a serious car accident on Hosmer Pond Road in Camden late Sunday night.
Camden police and the fire department were called to Hosmer Pond Road around 10:50 p.m. Sunday, after one of the occupants called 911. According to Camden Police Sgt. John Tooley, 16-year-old Robert Bishop of Rockport was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe west on Hosmer Pond Road, near Emery Way, went he lost control of the vehicle.
"It looks like he was exceeding the speed limit and may have hit the soft shoulder, corrected and then over-corrected, and then went off the road and hit the tree," said Tooley. The accident occurred near Oak Hill Cemetery.
Tooley said that Bishop did not have a license, and had only just received his learner's permit last week.
The Tahoe was destroyed in the crash, and Bishop had to be extricated from it. The other three teens had gotten themselves out of the vehicle and were reportedly found standing nearby when first responders arrived.
In addition to Camden Police and Fire Department, Rockport Police, North East Mobile Health and eventually another ambulance from Rockland EMS responded to the scene.
Tooley said that Bishop sustained very serious injuries in the crash. After being removed from the vehicle, Bishop was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center, and from there, Tooley thought he had been transferred elsewhere by LifeFlight of Maine helicopter.
The passengers were identified as two teens from Camden, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, and a 16-year-old from Rockport.
One of the boys sustained head lacerations and a possible concussion, while another had a possible fractured arm.
"He saw the impact coming, and put his arm up in front of him, which probably caused his injury" said Tooley.
The third boy sustained abrasions and bruises to his head, said Tooley. The three injured teens were also taken to Pen Bay Medical Center, where they received treatment and are now at their homes, recovering.
Tooley said the investigation into the crash is continuing.
"I do know the preliminary investigation is showing speed and driver inexperience were contributing factors, but I am still looking for any other factors that may have contributed to the accident," said Tooley.
There is no word yet on the condition of the two most seriously injured teenagers, said Tooley.
