Drivers, passenger uninjured in Rockport two-car crash
ROCKPORT — Saturday afternoon traffic in Rockport was backed-up on Route 1 and Old County Road in both directions August 6 around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection due to a two-car crash.
Rockport Police Officer Dana Smith responded to the accident. Smith said the rear end collision occurred after Harley Coldwell, 43, of Rockland, applied his brakes in his 2001 Dodge pick-up truck and they did not work when he attempted to come to a stop at the traffic light at the intersection of Route 1 and Old County Road. Coldwell crashed into the rear bumper area of a 2006 Hyundai sedan driven by John Shaw, 52, of Madison, who was stopped at the traffic light directly ahead of him. Both vehicles had reached the intersection traveling on Old County Road.
Smith said that when the cars collided, Shaw’s vehicle was pushed nearly out into the approaching travel lanes on Commercial Street but fortunately no additional vehicles were involved.
The two drivers and the passenger in Shaw’s vehicle all escaped any injuries.
According to Smith, when Camden Exxon arrived at the scene to tow Coldwell’s vehicle, wrecker operator Steve Laite confirmed there were “zero brakes” in the pick-up truck and a broken brake line.
Rockport firefighters, who managed traffic control on Route 1 and Old County Road, quickly cleared the crash scene.
