Driver falls asleep, crashes into St. George boulder
ST. GEORGE — A crash on the River Road in St. George left one driver with minor injuries, and traffic backed up on both lanes of the heavily traveled Route 131.
At approximately 3:20 p.m., Aug. 10, Knox County Deputy Sheriff Justin Hills responded to the crash, which occurred when Thomas Lloyd, 78, fell asleep at the wheel and drifted across the center line.
Lloyd had been traveling south when his car passed into the north-bound lane, left the road, landed in the ditch and crashed into a larger boulder, according to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, in a news release.
The 2014 Toyota Corolla came to a final rest on top of the boulder, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Lloyd suffered minor injuries, which were not life threatening. He was transported to Pen Bay Medical Center by St. George Rescue for an evaluation after the vehicle was stabilized.
Knox County Sheriff's Office, St George Fire Department, St. George Rescue, and the South Thomaston Fire Department responded to the crash.
