Dorothy Mae Blastow, obituary
ROCKLAND — Dorothy Mae Blastow, 89, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2016.
Born in Rockland on Dec. 10, 1926, she was the daughter of Henry Carmen and Agnes Wotton Hutchinson.
Dorothy was a loving mother, homemaker and friend to every generation of the Blastow and Hutchinson families.
A “red-headed firecracker,” she loved being at home and was a kid-at-heart. She sang and danced everything from the Depression Era up through the Elvis years. Simplicity was her virtue. A beautiful, startling, petite red-head, she had an air of aristocracy, yet the demeanor of a peasant.
She simply loved all of her family. She married Valmore G. Blastow Sr. on Jan. 3, 1946. Together they shared 51 years as one; until on March 24, 1997, he passed from her everyday grip.
Dorothy was also predeceased by a grandson, Danny Blastow; her son-in-law, Lester Staples; her sisters, Ethel (Lavoie) Mank, Ida Davis and Ruth Harvey; and a brother, Owen Hutchinson.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Staples; her sons, Valmore Jr., Harry and Bruce; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great great-granddaughter; and her sisters-in-law, Gleneida Blastow and Alice Hutchinson.
A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, May 2 at 2 p.m. at Achorn Cemetery on Old County Road in Rockland. The Rev. Wayne Sawyer will officiate. A reception will follow at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home’s 104 Limerock Street center.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home.
