Donald Flanders, obituary
BELFAST — Donald Edwin Flanders, 85, died Oct. 17, 2013, at his home in Belfast. Born in Belfast Oct. 21, 1927, he was the son of Arthur E. and Bertha (Nickerson) Flanders and was a graduate of Crosby High School Class of 1950. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1948.
While residing in Massachusetts, Donald worked as assistant manager for 20 years at Atlantic Market in Marblehead, and also owned and operated his own cleaning business. He later moved back to Belfast and worked as a housing inspector for the Farmer's Home Administration, retiring in December 1989. He was an avid reader, and his hobbies included playing classical guitar and violin. He was also a very dedicated fan of the New England Patriots.
The Flanders family would like to extend their thanks to all of his caregivers, including Diana Cook and Louie Murray.
Surviving are his children, Janna L. Swift of Belfast, Steven D. Flanders and his wife, Cheryl, of Ellsworth, Rebecca A. Maddison of Berwick and Judith Morse and her husband, Harold, of Belmont; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his former wife, Frances Spear Flanders; his brothers and sisters, Eunice Brock Corey, Esther Brock Bryant, Joseph "Buddy" Brock, Carroll Flanders and Joyce Flanders.
A graveside service will be held Monday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. at Grove Cemetery in Belfast. If desired, memorial gifts may be made in his memory to Waldo County General Hospital Hospice, P.O. Box 287, Belfast, ME 04915.
