Donald ‘Bud’ Chisholm, obituary
OWLS HEAD — Donald J. “Bud” Chisholm, 95, died March 20, 2016, at the Sussman House in Rockport.
Born in Rockland on Aug. 20, 1920, he was the son of Thomas H. and Gladys Joyce Chisholm. Educated in local schools, he was a 1939 graduate of Rockland High School.
Prior to World War II, he worked at the Todd-Bath Shipyard in South Portland, before enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps. From 1942 to 1945 Bud served with the Army Air Force, primarily attached to the 353rd Pioneer Mustang Fighter Squadron in England, France and Germany.
On June 10, 1950, he married Margaret “Peggy” Dodd in Bogota, N.J. The couple's first home was in Owls Head at Crockett's Beach in Ash Point. Together, Margaret and Bud built a home at 50 Talbot Ave. in Rockland, where they raised seven children. In 1975 they moved to their home at Ginn Point.
From 1945 to 1954, he owned and operated Quality Shoe Shop in Rockland. Bud spent the next 25 years of his career as a postal carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Rockland, retiring in 1981
Long active in his community, Bud was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and was a long time communicant of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. He was a charter member of the Rockland Junior Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in establishing the Rockland Little League Baseball program. He was a longtime member of the Rockland and Samoset Golf Clubs.
Family get-togethers were most important to Bud. He particularly enjoyed the annual family lobster feed, where he could often be found directing traffic for arriving guests. Sailing was another favorite pastime and he looked forward to the Ginn Point Regatta, an annual competition between Bud, his son-in-law and a neighbor, with the winner receiving the Thomas Chisholm Trophy.
Bud displayed a “never give up” attitude, made evident by the way he lived his life, successfully building three homes and multiple boats.
In addition to his parents, Bud was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Margaret, in 2011; a son, Donald D. Chisholm; one grandson, Tyler Watkinson; a sister, Katherine Leadbetter; and two brothers, Raymond Chisholm and Thomas Chisholm.
He is survived by one son, Patrick Chisholm of Portland; five daughters and their husbands, Joyce and David Southard of North Berwick, Constance and Richard Cantara of Sanford, Margaret and Ronald Watkinson of Owls Head, Colleen and Brian Tolman of Warren, and Kerry and Philip Barnes of Owls Head; 10 grandchildren, and their spouses, Sarah and Colin Phillips, Kent and Katie Southard, Shannon Cantara, James and Sue Cantara, Jennifer and Edward Lowy, Ross Watkinson, Lee and Darcie Watkinson, Erica Tolman, Lindsey and Mike Rollins, and Kelsey Barnes; and nine great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
