Camden-Rockport Middle School takes Little Mermaid Jr. to the stage

CAMDEN – Mark the date. A great family event will take place at the Strom Auditorium at Camden Hills Regional High School in Rockport, April 1, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 2, at 3 p.m. That’s when the Camden Rockport Middle School will present Disney's The Little Mermaid Jr.
Costumes and puppeteers highlight the music, song and dance. An eight-foot-tall evil octopus, eight mermaids, a crab, King Neptune and seagulls all show the enormous effort that went into this production.
Colorful characters alone make it a visual experience for children of all ages. Children under five are admitted free to all performances.
A Youth Arts grant provided puppets for the show. Nancy Parker, Portland, worked with the after-school art club and fifth-grade students through the CRMS art program to create fish and character headpieces for the show, with the help CRMS art teacher Kristen Anderson.
Director Allysa Anderson said the entire fifth grade manned the puppets.
"That's a 100-plus people doing the puppets," she said. "The puppets were a huge undertaking. They've worked on them since January. Cast and tech crew is another 60 people. It's a lot of people all moving around."
Indeed: the octopus alone takes 16 people to make it work. There are gulls flying and fish swimming, two eels and seahorses, and it’s quite amazing to see it all come together around 60 students singing and dancing.
The show was double-cast, meaning there will be two different casts, each performing one of the dates the show will run. The show will run for just one weekend.
The Little Mermaid Jr. is easy to follow. “Jr.” means it is a shortened version and easy to fit into the hour and 30 minutes the show will run.
Cast members Jack Lawrence, Annabel-Milisa Parker, Sam Maltese. Jesse Bifulco, Cam Henderson and Angus Carter will appear Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. on penbaypilot's the Chris Wolf Show. WRFR and mainecoast.tv (channel 7).
The cast members will talk about the show and sing a song from the production.
Two shows only. Friday, April 1, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, April 2 at 3 p.m. Strom Auditorium at Camden Hills Regional High School 25 Keelson Dr in Rockport, Tickets are on sale at HAV II in Camden and the Camden-Rockport Middle School office. $8 per ticket, children under five are free.
