April 30 - May 1 rain, wind and floods cause road closures, damage, outages








KNOX COUNTY — The reports continue to rush in to Knox Regional Communications Center regarding the effects of an overnight storm that pounded the area. Rain and wind advisories proved correct as significant rain blew through.
A weather blitz added lightning and thunder to the mix between 3:45 and 4:15 a.m., starting the responses by some fire department crews to downed trees and powerlines. Others would follow suit as more residents became aware of traffic hazards.
Heavy rain is to end later in the morning, but river flooding may last a few days due to runoff, said the National Weather Service in Gray. Winds are still gusting to 40 knots, but are expected to diminish and turn out of the southwest instead of the east.
How much rain fell? The official National Weather Service count on May 1, taken in West Rockport, was 6.27 inches.
Here’s what we know about as of 7:15 a.m.:
RSU 13 has a two-hour delay.
Thomaston’s Watt Street has flooding due to an overwhelmed storm drain that Public Works crews can’t keep up with.
The traffic lights at Thomaston’s Route 1 and High Street were off completely around 6 a.m.
Route 131 in Warren is closed near Wotton’s Mill Road due to a tree, pole, and wires down.
Grierson Road, in South Thomaston, had a tree across the wires.
Hatchet Mountain Road, in Hope, is flooded with one lane collapsed.
Robbins Road, in Hope, is flooded and impassable.
Ludwig Road, in Hope, has a partial road collapse.
There are many flooded basements in the area, including St. George and Waldoboro.
Barnestown Road, near house number 905, is closed due to road collapse.
Lincolnville’s Hope Road, near Marriner Drive, is reporting flooding.
Route 235 and Old Augusta Road in Warren is closed with a downed tree on fire.
The Town of St. George issued a late afternoon announcement (1:30 p.m.) that Kinney Woods Road is blocked at the brook. Crews will be working on it on Tuesday (5/2) and the road will reopen to through traffic as soon as possible.
Power outages are plenty, especially in Knox County, with CMP reporting the following as of 8:30 a.m.
