Work on Islesboro sinkhole scheduled for Monday, March 18

ISLESBORO — William Geary, director of the Maine State Ferry Service, has provided an update to the Islesboro Town Office regarding the sinkhole at the ferry entrance where, by the afternoon of Friday, March 8, the hole in the road had become too significant to drive over.

In the update, which the municipality distributed as an email news release on March 14, Geary announced that work trucks will be transported to the island on Friday, March 15, and will stage through the weekend, allowing them to be ready to work after the Monday morning, 10 a.m., mainland-bound ferry leaves. According to Geary, repairs need to coincide with the tides and will take about 4 hours to complete and the cement needs to sit for 24 hours.

Service will resume on Tuesday morning with a steel plate being over the concrete area.

“There is no ‘hot top’ available right now and once that is available they will be back over to finish it up,” said the email.

Since the March 8 incident, which put Islesboro sea transport of vehicles to a halt, some islanders have mentioned that the State was aware of the growing sinkhole as far back as 2019, and wonder why it wasn’t tended to long before now.
