THOMASTON — A woman motorcyclist was thrown over a guardrail and approximately 30 feet down an embankment in a late morning accident, Oct. 19.

According to Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Kirk Guerrette, the accident occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m. at the intersection of High Street and New County Road in Thomaston. According to the sheriff’s office report, Melissa Robbins, of Spruce Head, was driving a friend's 2002 yellow Honda Spirit on High Street. Witnesses said she halted at the stop sign at the intersection, then began to turn left onto Route 1 when she lost control of the motorcycle, suddenly accelerating into the guardrail.

Robbins, who was wearing a helment, was thrown from the motorcycle and over the embankment. She suffered a compound fracture to her right leg, according to the report.

Thomaston and Rockland fire departments and emergency medical services were able to get Robbins to the top of the hill. She was then transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor via a Life Flight helicopter. All Directions towed the motorcycle at the owner's request.
