YORK — The U11 PenBay boys soccer team won the Harvest Cup over Columbus Day Weekend in York. There were nine teams competing for the trophy. The teams were divided into two groups and after the first two days of pool play the winners for the groups played the runners up in the opposite group on Monday in the semifinal with the winners advancing to the final on the same day.

PenBay won their group convincingly beating Marshwood–Melino 3-0, Kittery–Johnson 6–0 and York–Reilly 8-0. In the semifinal PenBay played a different Kittery team and won 4–1. It was a tough game and after getting a couple of goals Kittery rallied and scored on the breakaway. PenBay settled down and manage to see the game out.

In the final PenBay met Marshwood–Melino again by upsetting the top team in the opposite group. The finals were tense and the kids were a little nervous. The first half was a tight affair with PenBay holding a slender lead. In the second half PenBay played very well and deserved the victory but all credit to Coach Melino’s team for never laying down and fighting until the end. The final score was 5–0 in favor of PenBay.

It was a great weekend and PenBay played very good soccer the whole tournament. It was pleasing to see that everything we have worked on at practice has translated to the actual games. There were some very good combinations and team work throughout the tournament. While it is always great to do well and even win a tournament the best part is for the parents, kids and coaches to bond and have a great weekend.

York Soccer Club has done an excellent job with their tournament and we look forward to returning again next year.

The following players represented the U11 Boys at the Harvest Cup: Will Duke, Vishal Mellor, Aiden Aselton, Charlie Pons, Cam Brown, Eric LeBlond, Liam O’Dwyer, Quinn Riordan, Will Eggena, Quincy Messer, Owen Reynolds and Cole Castro. The team is coached by Patrick Mellor, Scott Pons and Dwight Pitcairn.
