Truck damages Camden-Rockport Arch, Union Street closed in vicinity

CAMDEN — A tractor-trailer truck making an early afternoon delivery to a store on Union Street Aug. 23 damaged a post of the Camden-Rockport Arch to such an extent that the structure will be dismantled and repaired. That means Union Street at the Camden-Rockport line is temporarily closed to traffic in the immediate vicinity of the arch.
The crash occurred as the driver was turning right from Curtis Ave. onto Union Street.
So that the arch does not fall onto traffic, the town of Camden decided to shut the road to vehicles until Friday at some point.
Contractors will remove the top of the arch and the pillar that was hit. Once removed, the road will be open again.
The town will decide when and how to repair the iconic arch, which was built in 1926, and rebuilt in the 1980s. According to the Camden Comprehensive Plan, the arch was a “true celebration of civic pride and electricity” and completed with an outline of 200 electric lights.
Lightbulbs still run across the top of the arch but have not been turned on for years.
