ALBION — Shirley M. (Linscott) Wakefield, 86, of Albion, passed away Sept. 21, 2015, surrounded by her loving family in Augusta. She was born Aug. 6, 1929, in Thorndike, to William and Dorothy (Bradford) Linscott.

Shirley worked at Truitt Bros., Penobscot Poultry and Penobscot Frozen Foods, and also provided an ironing and laundry service. She will be remembered as a hard worker from sun-up to sun-down.

Shirley enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, and was an all-around outdoorswoman. She also enjoyed wood-working and making toys that she sold, as well as giving them as gifts to her family. Shirley was a wonderful baker and was famous for her doughnuts, whoopie pies, fudge and many other sweets. She was a strong and independent woman before her time.

Her greatest love was her family – they were her pride and joy. Shirley cared for her son, who was born with spina bifida, giving him a quality of life for 29 years that the doctors said he would never have. Shirley had a stroke and had to live at Harbor Hill for rehabilitation. Her goal was to be at home and she attained that goal in April of this year with the help of her family and the nurses at Assistance Plus.

She was predeceased by her parents; two spouses, Eli M. Whitcomb and Vaughan Wakefield; her son, Eli C. "Sonny" Whitcomb; and six siblings, Leslie, Kenneth, Harold, Alton, Wilmina and Marie. Shirley is survived by her loving children, Danny Whitcomb and his wife, Linda, and Randy Whitcomb Sr. and his wife, Darlene, all of Belmont, Gloria Howard and her husband, Kevin, of Frankfort, and Bobby Whitcomb and his wife, Denise, of Camden; her stepchildren, Roger Wakefield and his wife, Brenda, of Norridgewock, Lillian Moody of Florida and Tammy Collins of Bangor; her sister, Geraldine Morrill and her husband, Robert, of Moscow; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Special thanks to the nurses at Assistance Plus for their care.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Oct., 1 at 11 a.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery in Albion.

Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home.
