Sharon L. (Goding) Romanow, obituary
Sharon L. (Goding) Romanow, 77, of Belfast, passed away July 30, 2025, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She could no longer breathe on her own and her heart was failing, but thanks to some wonderful medical staff both in Belfast and in Portland, she passed peacefully and painlessly surrounded by her loved ones.
She grew up in Auburn and South Portland. She graduated from the University of Maine at Orono, where she met the love of her life, Frederick Romanow. They were married in 1968 in Portland while he was completing Law School. They moved to Belfast, where Sharon taught English at Belfast Area High School for 34 years. She was loved and remembered by all her students. Sharon would often run into a former student and they would reminisce about the days at the high school. Sharon would remember each student she had. All who knew her loved her.
Sharon was involved in many social and other groups. She was on the Board of Trustees of the Belfast Senior College and was very involved in Delta Kappa Gamma, an association of retired teachers, where she was President for a time. She was also involved in many other groups. She loved being involved in her weekly bridge group and with her wine group.
Sharon was very proud of her son, Michael, and all of his accomplishments. Michael worked for many years as a commercial diver, living in Louisiana and traveling worldwide for his job. He recently came back to Belfast to help his mother in her last few months.
Sharon was predeceased by her beloved husband, Frederick, and her nephew Ed Szalajeski.
She is survived by her son, Michael of Damariscotta; her sisters, Joanne Rioux of Brunswick, Pamela Szalajeski of Portland, and Gayle Koralek of Belfast; her two brothers-in-law, Edmund Szalajeski and Richard Koralek; sister-in-law, Ginny Hundley and her family; and nieces and nephews, including Karen Szalajeski, Jacob Koralek, Katherine Koralek, and Aaron Koralek. She is also survived by relatives in the Auburn area, including the Bates, Godings, Spragues, and many others all over the country.
A celebration of her life will be held Friday, August 8, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave, Belfast, ME. A private internment will be held at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
