CAMDEN — A Searsport man escaped serious injury when his motorcycle collided with a turning vehicle in Camden Saturday afternoon.

Michael Kinney, 31, and a friend were riding their motorcycles south on High Street, toward downtown, around 1 p.m. Oct. 19. At the top of Main Street, Paul Tibbetts, 81, of Camden, was stopped and waiting to turn left onto Mountain Street.

"Tibbetts saw the bikes coming and thought he had time to turn," said Camden Police Officer Allen Weaver Jr.

Kinney, driving a 1993 Honda CVR 600, struck the right rear passenger door of Tibbetts 2014 Cadillac sedan with the front of his motorcycle. Kinney was not wearing a helmet and went down on the road.

Camden Fire Department and North East Mobile Heath Services crews were called to the scene.

Weaver said that Kinney was checked out by emergency medical services personnel and declined transport.

Tibbetts was not cited for failing to yield to the motorcyclists.

"Both parties described the situation as being pretty sure he [Tibbetts] would have had time to turn, and that the bikers were a good distance away, but he made the turn slower than expected," said Weaver. "So although he technically failed to yield, he did not ignore them and totally fail to yield."

Weaver said the Cadillac sustained a dent in the door, and while the motorcycle was not totaled, it did sustain a good amount of damage to the front end.
