Rockport police charge Camden man with burglary, unlawful sexual contact
ROCKPORT — A Camden man was arrested early Sunday morning after a Rockport homeowner reportedly discovered the man in his home, on the second floor where his wife had been sleeping.
Rockport Police officer Robbie Shaw arrested and charged Eli Kemberling, 22, with burglary, class B; theft, class E; unlawful sexual contact; and three counts of violating conditions of release.
According to Rockport Police Chief Mark Kelley, Kemberling entered the home on Meadow Street and snuck past the sleeping husband. When the man heard his wife scream upstairs, he went up and cornered Kemberling inside the house, and pinned him down until Shaw arrived on scene.
Meadow Street runs from Route 17 (Rockland Street) to Park Street, before the Ashwood Waldorf School.
Shaw said he was on Simonton Road, not far from the residence, when the call came in around 1:15 a.m. so was able to get there very quickly.
The charges of violating conditions of release stem from a prior operating under the influence charge, said Shaw. Kemberling was charged with theft for allegedly stealing alcohol.
Because of his prior charges, Kemberling is being held without bail pending an appearance in Rockland District Court early this week.
"There is also a potential that the suspect could be charged with multiple unsolved similar crimes," said Kelley.
On Aug. 3, Camden police enlisted the assistance of Maine State Police Trooper Erich Verhille and K-9 Clint to track a suspect who reportedly entered a home early that Sunday morning and startled sleeping residents. The suspect was described as being in his 20s. That case remains open.
