ROCKLAND — Rockland Police arrested a city man for operating under the influence and other crimes after he allegedly fled the scene of an accident Thursday night.

Police were called May 5, at around 9:15 p.m., to a crash at the corner of Union and Myrtle streets. When they arrived, they found an abandoned 2003 Ford Taurus that had crashed into a building, detaching the building's entrance ramp and destroying it.

Police said the Taurus was also totaled in the accident, and that they found evidence inside the car indicating that someone had been injured in the crash.

A search of the area ensued, and through the investigation, officers were led to an address on Gay Street, which is about a 15-minute walk from where the accident occurred. Officers were alerted after a call was placed to Rockland EMS to respond for a male with facial injuries at the Gay Street residence.

The man, 22-year-old Jacob Ortiz, was eventually determined to be the driver, according to police in a news release, and he was transported to Pen Bay Medical Center by Rockland EMS.

Following treatment of his injuries, Ortiz was transported to Knox County Jail and charged with operating under the influence (second offense), leaving the scene of a personal injury crash and failing to report a crash by quickest means.

Deputies with the Knox County Sheriff's Office and officers with the Thomaston and Rockport Police departments assisted Rockland Police in the investigation.
