Raymond Hicks, obituary

CAMDEN — Raymond Alexander Hicks Sr., 83, died Oct. 9, 2015, at Veterans Administrative Hospital at Togus. Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, on May 17, 1932, he was the son of James Stanley and Grace Lee (Anderson) Hicks.

Following graduation from high school, Ray served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1982, retiring as a master sargent. During his military career, he served in Korea, Viet Nam, two tours in Germany and France, and received many awards.

Ray married Sylvia Whitney on May 25, 1957, in France.

In 1982, Ray and Sylvia moved to Decatur, Ga., where he drove a truck for Union Carbide and later Excel. In 2002, they moved from Covington, Ga., to Camden.

Ray was a member of American Legion Post #30, Amity Masonic Lodge, Anah Temple Shrine, Scottish Rite Bodies, Oceanview Chapter #201 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Ray enjoyed spending time with his family at Lake St. George.

Surviving is his wife, Sylvia M. Hicks of Camden; three children, Raymond A. Hicks Jr. and his wife, Melinda, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Letitia Matznick and her husband, Jim, of Newnan, Ga., and Ernest L. Hicks and his partner, Ashleigh, of Kidwell Hedrick, Fla.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Harriett Whitney of Liberty; and several nieces and nephews. Ray was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.

A memorial service with military honors was held Oct. 16 at the Rockport Masonic Center. The Rev. Linda Campbell Marshall officiated.
