Police, firefighters hit the links for charity at emergency responder golf tournament

ROCKPORT — There has always been a lighthearted rivalry between police and fireman especially about cops having a donut fetish. Sometimes the humor helps distract the first responders from the heightened emotions at emergency situations and what they face on a daily basis. But whatever way you look at it, the rivalry runs deep.

On Saturday, June 17, the Goose River Golf Club in Rockport will be a new venue for the two agencies to “duke it out” in a friendly competition at the First Annual Emergency Responder Police vs. Fire Golf Tournament. Golfers will tee off at 8 a.m.

The concept and planning for the tournament has been a collaboration between Rockport Fire Chief Jason Peasley and Goose River’s new golf professional, Alex Plummer.

“One of my goals with taking over the golf course is involving the community in golf tournaments and to understand how the local economy works. It works better when people work together,” said Plummer.

Peasley added that besides raising funds for local charities, the tournament is a great way to have fun and help the community at the same time. A trophy will be presented to the winning team or agency.

One quarter of the proceeds will go to the golf course while the remaining funds will be split between fire and police and donated to charities they choose.

The level of competition may be enhanced according to some recent sightings on facebook. Some police and fireman have recently enjoyed golf excursions to warmer climates. Possibly there are additional golfers honing their skills that are more tight-lipped. It looks like we will have to wait until June 17 to find out if these preseason practice outings are successful.

The cost to participate is $50 per person, or $200 per team. Businesses can sponsor each hole for $100 or donate food and beverages for the barbeque after the tournament. Peasley is also hoping to receive donations of food including hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and chips.

To register for the event, players need to register with Peasley by Thursday, June 1. Registration fees will be collected at the event.
